Cancelling a Protection Plan
If you are a current contract holder you can review the information below to learn more about cancelling an existing contract, including how the refund process works.

To cancel your coverage, click on the appropriate cancellation form link below, print the form, fill out the requested information including signature and return the form to the dealership at which the service contract was purchased (referred to as the issuing dealer).

 

Cancellation requests are typically processed within 5 days of receipt. Any cancellation received prior to the last business day of the month is cancelled within that same month. In the states of Florida and Washington, cancellations must be received four days prior to last day of the month to be cancelled within the same month.

 

When requesting a cancellation of your contract, we recommend returning to the dealership at which you purchased your service contract. However, there are some instances where Protective Asset Protection will process a cancellation directly:

  • The issuing dealership is out of business – the contract holder or lienholder can process the cancellation directly with Protective.
  • The issuing dealer resides in Florida or Washington – the contract holder can process the cancellation directly with Protective.

Documentation requirements in addition to a completed cancellation form include the following:

  • Customer Request: Customer signature required.
  • Loan Paid in Full: Copy of paid-in-full letter from lienholder (if loan paid in full).
  • Vehicle Sold: Customer signature and Bill of Sale required (if cancellation request is more than 90 days from current date).
  • Trade In: Customer signature and trade-in documents (if cancellation request is more than 90 days from current date).
  • Total Loss: Copy of insurance company total loss letter (if cancellation request is due to a total loss).

Cancelled service contracts may be eligible for a refund. Refer to your contract for complete details on how a cancellation refund is calculated. If you have financed your service contract, any applicable refund will be sent to the lender unless your loan has been paid in full. Typically, after a cancellation has been processed, refunds and/or statements are mailed to the dealership within six to eight weeks, with the following exceptions:

  • Refunds for Auto/RV contracts funded by a lender take 6 to 8 weeks from date cancelled.
  • Contract refunds for out-of-business dealerships take 10 to 14 business days from date cancelled.
  • Florida and Washington State contract refunds take 7 to 10 business days from date cancelled.
  • Refunds for contracts paid using Service Payment Plan (SPP) take 4 to 6 weeks from date cancelled.
  • AAA contract refunds take 3 to 5 business days for paid-in-full contracts. AAA contracts financed by a lender can take up to 14 business days. Please contact Protective if inquiring about contracts not paid in full.
  • Prizm contract refunds take 7 to 10 days from date cancelled.
  • Once the cancellation paperwork is received and processed by Protective, a refund is sent to the issuing dealership during the following month for further processing. If you have any further questions on refunds, please contact us at 800-323-5771.
